Thesis Manual. The Thesis Manual was prepared by the Graduate College to provide guidance for the student and advisor in the formal preparation of the thesis, and should be consulted before the student begins compiling the document. While there are a number of format and presentation requirements that should be followed.
Students in all programs must submit their master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation to the Graduate College electronically as a PDF using the ETD submission system. The Graduate College no longer accepts paper submissions effective Fall 2011. Submit ETD or Check Current Status.The dissertation committee is appointed by the Dean of the Graduate College on the recommendation of the student’s department or program. The defense committee consists of at least five persons, of whom one must be from outside their program. The chair of the committee must be a full member of the UIC graduate faculty.The Annual Graduate College Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Award is given to the most outstanding master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation in each of the four Graduate Program divisions, as determined by the Graduate College Awards Committee. The dean of the Graduate College formally appoints the dissertation at the recommendation of the department. Dissertation defenses are scheduled upon mutual agreement of the student and faculty advisor, and at the convenience of the committee members.

The three institutions in the program are the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago. UIC students are permitted to take a total of three quarters of classes through the CMEP program at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.
Maintain a minimum Graduate Degree GPA of 3.00. Make satisfactory progress toward completing degree requirements, including the dissertation or thesis. A student who violates any of the continuation and probation rules specified in the UIC Graduate Catalog may be dropped at any time from the Graduate College, and thus the student’s degree.
However, since the Graduate College requires that dissertation committees have a member from outside the Program (see Section IV), and since the preliminary examination committee often forms the basis of the future dissertation committee, you may want to ask an outside member to be on the preliminary examination committee as well.

Formatting and other guidelines for master’s thesis research are described in detail in a Thesis Manual published by the Graduate College. You must email a PDF copy of your thesis to the computer science Student Affairs office for a format check one week prior to the deadline set by the Graduate College.

The dissertation committee is appointed by the Dean of the Graduate College on the recommendation of the PhD program. The defense committee consists of at least five (5) members, of whom at least three (3) are JACSW faculty with full UIC graduate faculty membership.
The UIC College of Engineering strategic plan states that students in a PhD program who have received any financial support from UIC—such as a teaching assistantship, research assistantship, fellowship, or tuition and fee waiver—cannot transfer into any MS program in the College of Engineering, which includes computer science, without an approved petition.

The Graduate College specifies requirements for committee composition: for preliminary exams, the committee consists of at least five members, of whom at least three are UIC Graduate Faculty with full membership, and two of whom must be tenured. The chair of the Committee must be a full member of the UIC Graduate Faculty.
